7 Steps to Elevate Your Personal Brand

Your image is much more than a good photo. It’s a strategic and emotional expression of who you are and what you stand for.
I’m sharing 7 key steps I work through with my clients to build an authentic, powerful image aligned with their purpose. Each stage includes real examples and photography tips based on my experience in branding photography.
This is not a technical manual. It’s a sensitive, visual guide to help you present your best self, through images that communicate, connect, and leave a lasting impression.

Step 1: Recognize your Essence
Before you think about photos, social media, or colors, ask yourself:
Who are you today, and what do you want your brand to express?
Your image doesn’t begin with how things look, it begins within. Your essence is the invisible thread that ties together your personal story, values, and purpose with how you show up in the world. When that’s unclear, communication becomes scattered and doesn’t connect.
Reflection Questions:
- What excites me about what I do?
- What sets me apart beyond my services?
- What values do I want my brand to reflect?
- What emotions do I want to evoke in people who see or hear me?

Practice Exercise:
Write a letter as if you are your brand, speaking to future clients. Tell them who you are, why you do what you do, and how you plan to support them.
Photography Tip:
When someone is internally aligned, it shows in their images. Their eyes look more confident, their posture is more relaxed, and their visual message is clearer. The camera captures what isn’t said.

3. Use a professional high-resolution image
A high-resolution image will ensure your photo is sharp and clean. Don’t forget to hydrate in the days leading up to your session to minimize the impact of blemishes or discoloration.

4. Select the optimum image sizes to upload
To ensure your LinkedIn profile looks its best, it’s important to upload your photos in the right sizes. For your profile picture, the ideal dimensions are 400 pixels by 400 pixels. For your LinkedIn banner or background photo, aim for 584 pixels by 396 pixels. Using the correct image sizes ensures your photos display clearly and crisply, creating a polished and professional appearance.

5. Position Your Face to Fill at Least 60% of the Frame
For a strong, professional look, ensure that your face takes up at least 60% of the frame. Crop the photo from the top of your shoulders to just above your head, allowing your face to be the focal point. This positioning highlights your features, making it easier for others to connect with you and strengthening the impact of your profile.

6. Pay attention to your expression
Your expression plays a crucial role in conveying confidence and professionalism. A skilled headshot photographer will guide you through every step, coaching you to project the right mood and present yourself confidently. They understand the technical aspects of lighting, angles, and editing, ensuring that you look your best. With their expertise, you can relax, focus on your pose, and leave the rest to them.

7. Wear what you would wear for office
Choose your clothing in advance, ensuring that your outfit is comfortable and professional. Solid colors work best on camera, creating a clean and polished look. Be sure to iron your clothes to avoid wrinkles. Bring a few outfit options to the session and select the photos that make you feel confident and comfortable for your LinkedIn profile.
